DON’T ABOLISH SLAVERY!
I will provide the compelling reasons to keep the institution of slavery alive and well, feel free to try to refute the facts in your head:
Economic impact: The sudden end of slavery would have a devastating economic impact on the slave owners. The cotton economy would collapse, the tobacco crop would dry up, and rice would no longer be profitable. Without the labor of the slaves, the slave owners are left with no skills and no source of income, and therefore can no longer support themselves, ultimately leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of people and families. Is that what we want? Sure, some people are “suffering,” if you can even call it that, but other people are greatly benefiting from the labor of the slaves, affording to pay the necessary functions to stay alive like their healthcare, housing, food, etc. Abolishing slavery would mean the end for some people; their money will disappear overnight as they can no longer support themselves.
Social order: Without slavery, former slaves would cause mayhem by stealing, raping, and killing. Without their masters dictating what the slaves can and can't do, punishing them for wrongdoing like looking at women the wrong way or walking at night, the free slaves would immediately start to kill, rape, and steal since they have no master to keep them in line. Adding to this, the slave population could not take care of themselves without the force of their masters telling them what is good and what is bad, what can sustain life and what can't. It would be cruel to let the free slaves fall into destitution and suffering, due to their own poor choices. Enslavement of individuals would protect against this.
The Slaves are Happy: What is better than having a place to sleep, getting cooked meals, having clean water to drink, and working in sunny conditions? In my view, that is the best life ever. In exchange for some work, these slaves have it good. I don't understand why they would want to face the uncertainty of life not knowing if there will be food the next day. It would be foolish to get rid of these great conditions for the people as the alternative is worse.
Slavery has always existed: Since the dawn of time, slavery has always existed. Great civilizations have slavery such as ancient Egypt, ancient China, the Akkadian Empire, Assyria, Babylonia, Persia, ancient Israel, ancient Greece, ancient India, the Roman Empire, the Arab Islamic Caliphates and Sultanates, Nubia, the pre-colonial empires of Sub-Saharan Africa, etc. This only shows that it is human nature to have slaves, and people will always be inferior to others. It would be foolish to abolish a natural human quality, requiring great shifts in how our societies currently function and even great bloodshed, to eventually return to a slave state.
It is a necessary evil: Yes some aspect of slavery might be bad, such as the literal confinement of individuals for doing nothing or limiting peoples freedoms, but that is the cost of having a civilized society. One free of rapists and killers ruling the streets.
Now, I do not believe in slavery. I am an Anarcho-Capitalist. You have the freedom to choose what you want to do as long as you don’t violate other people's rights. The comparison of reasons to keep slavery are the same reasons why people today argue to keep the institution of government. When reading the paragraphs above, you probably refuted them yourself, exclaiming how absurd each one is. But here is some more writing to explain each connection to today:
Economic Impact: The slaves are the taxpayers in today's time (garbage men, doctors, software engineers, etc.) and they are the ones being forced to pay for welfare programs and politicians' jobs. The slave owners are the politicians and welfare recipients; they don't work but they still get money from the slaves' labor. What we have today is literal slavery. People reaching into the pockets of the working people to pay themselves for doing nothing. If these slave owners die off or can't find a moral way to survive, then they deserve that. To deny this would be to advocate for the enslavement of people.
Social Order: People can act morally without the need of a master. Billions of people do it every day. There are some people that don't act morally, but that does not constitute a slave master for all people. There are other ways of dealing with immoral actions.
The Slaves are Happy: This is the biggest problem today; people vote. People vote because they think they know what is best for all people. There is a new library that is being proposed in your city. You want it because you will only have to pay $100 a year in property taxes, and you will use it a lot. What is there not to lose? Why wouldn't everyone want a library; everyone should pay for what I want, it will benefit us all. Well, maybe there is someone who doesn't want to pay the $100 and would rather spend that money on organic foods. To decide what other people should do with their property based on what you like is slavery. To decide that slavery is fine because I like it is immoral. Voting is immoral.
It is a necessary evil: Evil is not necessary. Evil must be opposed, rejected, and avoided at all costs. It should never be viewed as something that we must unavoidably and inevitably participate in.
Slavery has always existed: Appeal to tradition (argumentum ad antiquitatem) is an argumentative fallacy. In this fallacy, an idea is claimed to be right because it is the way it was often done in the past. Slavery has been the norm for hundreds of years, then things change. Government has been the norm, and that is what is about to change.
